My father once joked that his biggest regret as a parent was that he didn't teach me more knots. The joke stuck with me and left me fixated on the ways in which children are delegated certain skills at a young age. I have crocheted wire, a traditionally female skill taught to me by my mother, into lengths of rope, then tied into various boy scout and climbing knots, a practical skill that is often saved for young boys. These pieces acknowledge the duality of binary gender as I wrestle with my own identity and constantly strive to find the grey areas within it.
